"I've never owned an Apple device"

Keep it that way, AI.

Anyone who thinks you need an Apple for what you do, is living 20 years in the past.

Any decent Windows laptop will suit your needs perfectly fine and will probably cost over half of what Apple will want to bend you over by.

Out of the box Apple Macs are not good for gaming,
All depends if you are prepared to faff around with Bootcamp to sut it up as Mac OS/Windows dual boot.
Another vote for Alenware - I got second hand one on eBay, it was only a year old and did me for five years before it failed. It was a great machine and the keyboard, especially was superb for typing.
One word of warning though their spares support is appalling on old kit. The on/off button failed and there were no spares available from Dell or anywhere else which I thought was pretty poor for a six year old laptop.

Cheapest route into Apple is to get a mac mini. M1 or M2 are still beats but you'd need a monitor, keyboard and a mouse. They are, however, great value for money

Agree with Wils

My MacBook Pro is at least 10 years old - still a fantastic laptop.

I had the Battery and hard drive replaced last year by a local guy for about £160 and now runs like the day I brought it.

My only reservation is that unless you are spending serious money, the screens are small.

Cheers AI- no worries! Hope you are too.

Wils- Yeah that is a really good point. Macbooks are very expensive on the face of it but you definitely get top quality build and longevity out of one.

There are definitely pros and cons to each. In my humble opinion unless you're editing huge, huge high quality video files you should be totally fine with either avenue.

If he's around, Defjam might have some good advice too. I think he's done a lot of music and photography.

I hate spending money on tech. But unless you're totally on a very tight budget, don't fuck about trying to save a few hundred quid, (hold your nose if you have to) and buy one of the latest (M1 chipsets) Apple Macbooks. Even the cheaper Macbook Air is a beast and it's so so light and slim.

I am typing this on a heavier Macbook pro and it is, without doubt, the most economical laptop you will be able to buy with these capabilities. Factor into the price that it will probably last you the best part of a decade. The other quality laptop makers won't last long before you need to replace them.

I've never owned an Apple device, yet I do notice that Macbooks seem to come highly recommended. Bit nervous about changing from Windows in case I don't like it. But not a dealbreaker if that's the best solution.

Thanks for the reply Scorch, hope you're well.

Strictly speaking a Macbook is your best bet if you're messing around editing large video and picture files, but you can probably get away with a mid range windows machine these days. Plenty of RAM and the most powerful processor your budget allows should do it. Those are your two key factors, I think. (Storage perhaps being a third consideration but you can buy external drives pretty cheap now) I do know that some graphic designers in the industry I work in have made the switch from Macbook and are getting along just fine.

Maybe look at HP, Lenovo or Dell?

Not really an expert at all, but that's all I got. Not sure really how useful it is.

Block I'm surprised you can afford it with the high inflation and your wages not up much in line. Was a good summer for the deck chair rentals I guess.

Gaming = 'Noncing off"

I need a new laptop ideally suited to photography (and possibly video) editing. Oh, and Football Manager of course.

Any recommendations WHOers? I'm currently poor but can work with whatever budget I need.

Treat yourself to a nice Alienware laptop. And be careful not to step on it and smash the screen after a few weeks.

Re: WHO Tech Gurus - Laptop Advice
Depends on your budget really.
PCSpecialist built a gaming desktop for my son and it was pricey but handles anything three years on and is good for another graphics card upgrade if and when that is required.
If you are on a budget go for second hand. I got a year old Alienware laptop for peanuts on Ebay and it does very nicely thanks.
